What is Urogynaecology?
Urogynaecology is the science where a gynaecologist is specialized in the problems of urinary incontinence, of vaginal prolapse (cystocele - rectocele) and, in general, in the diseases and disorders of the pelvic floor in women.
A specialization in this field is deemed necessary for the clinician to be able to diagnose, penetrate in depth into the problem and finally cure it.
Approach of the problem
There are various clinical conditions that can be manifested in a similar way /with similar symptoms. A wrong diagnosis and treatment could complicate further the problem.
The proper patient’s history, clinical examination, diagnostic tests and a treatment that is “tailor made” for the needs of each woman consist the key for the successful therapeutic approach of the problem.
Terminology
The International Continence Society has established a specific terminology for the function of the lower urinary tract: Urinary Incontinence is defined as “the discomfort caused by accidental involuntary loss of urine of any degree”.
This can be the result of various function abnormalities of the lower urinary tract or caused by various other diseases, which cause Urinary Incontinence under specific conditions.
